Commonly Used Clothing Fabrics

In addition to considering its brand, style design, color, and quality for a piece of clothing, one important factor must not be overlooked, and that is the fabric. Clothing fabric is one of the three elements of clothing. Fabrics can not only interpret the style and characteristics of clothing, but also directly influence the color and styling of clothing. We will briefly introduce the modeling characteristics of different material fabrics and their application in clothing design as follows.

1.Soft fabric

Soft fabrics are generally light and thin, with good drape, smooth modeling lines, and natural stretches of clothing contours. It mainly includes knitted fabrics and silk fabrics with scattered fabric structures and soft linen fabrics. Soft knitted fabrics often use linear and concise shapes to reflect the graceful curves of the human body in clothing design. Silk, linen and other fabrics are mostly loose and have pleated shapes, expressing the sense of flow of fabric lines.

2. Straight and cool fabric

The straight and cool fabric has clear lines and a sense of volume, which can form a plump clothing outline. Commonly include cotton, polyester-cotton, corduroy, linen, and various medium-thick wool and chemical fiber fabrics. This type of fabric can be used in designs that highlight the accuracy of clothing modeling, such as the design of suits and suits.

3. Glossy fabric

Glossy fabrics have a smooth surface and can reflect bright light. Such fabrics include fabrics with satin textures. It is most commonly used in evening dresses or stage costumes. It can produce a gorgeous and dazzling strong visual effect.

4. Heavy duty fabric

The heavy-duty fabrics are thick and stiff, which can produce a stable styling effect, including all kinds of thick woolen fabrics and quilted fabrics. The fabric has a sense of physical expansion and should not be pleated and piled up too much. In the design, A-shape and H-shape are the most appropriate.

5. Transparent fabric

The transparent fabric is light, thin and transparent, with an elegant and mysterious artistic effect. It includes cotton, silk, chemical fiber fabrics, etc., such as georgette, satin silk, chemical fiber lace and so on. In order to express the transparency of the fabric, the usual lines are natural and full, and they are often used in the varied H-shaped and round table-shaped designs.

6. Chemical fiber

Chemical fiber is a textile made of fibers made of polymer compounds as raw materials. Usually it is divided into two categories: artificial fiber and synthetic fiber. Their common advantages are bright colors, soft texture, crisp drape, smoothness and comfort. Their disadvantages are poor wear resistance, heat resistance, moisture absorption, and air permeability, and are easily deformed when exposed to heat, and they are prone to static electricity. Although it can be used to make all kinds of clothing, the overall grade is not high.
